Who may enter, and what is actually fixed

Access to licensed gaming venues in Mexico is for adults only, and the operator is responsible for controlling the door. That part is regulation: it does not depend on the day of the week, on how busy the floor is or on who is working the entrance.

Everything layered on top is house policy: membership registration, dress standards, camera rules, bag checks and the right of admission itself. House policy can change without notice and without a public announcement. When a review from an earlier year describes how the door worked, treat it as a description of that night, not as a rule you can rely on.

The document to carry

The safe assumption is the strict one: an original, government-issued document with your photograph on it. A photocopy, a photo on a phone screen and a document that has expired are the three refusals visitors describe most often, and none of them is unreasonable — the venue has to be able to verify the document it is looking at.

For a visitor arriving from another country, the passport is the document that removes the most argument. A foreign driving licence or a residence card may also be accepted, but acceptance of either is a decision the venue makes, not an entitlement you can insist on. If your plan depends on a specific document being accepted, that is exactly the thing to confirm by phone before you travel across the city.

Registration and the house card

Venues in Mexico City commonly register a visitor on first entry and issue a house or loyalty card that is then used on machines and for promotions. Expect a short form, expect the identification to be read or copied, and expect the card to be tied to your name rather than to the visit.

That is ordinary practice, and it is also a data decision you are making at the door. It is reasonable to ask what is stored, how long it is kept, whether the card is required to play at all or only to earn points, and whether registration also enrols you in marketing contact. Asking those questions at the counter costs nothing; reconstructing the answer later costs a lot more.

If the visit is a one-off and you have no interest in a loyalty programme, ask whether registration is a condition of entry or only a condition of the programme. The two are not the same thing, and the difference is worth one question.

Dress, condition and the right of admission

Casino floors in Mexico City read as casual rather than formal, and the refusals visitors report are rarely about elegance. They cluster around two things instead. The first is a specific prohibited list — sportswear, beachwear, sandals, caps or hoods that obscure the face — which exists because cameras have to be able to see a face, not because anyone is grading your outfit. The second is condition: visible intoxication is the refusal that no dress code fixes.

Because none of that is published as a stable rule, the honest instruction is a conservative one. Dress so that no item on a plausible prohibited list is the thing standing between you and the floor, keep your face visible at the entrance, and accept that admission is discretionary. A door refusal is not a dispute you win by arguing.

Phones, cameras and bags

Photography and filming on a gaming floor are normally restricted, and the restriction protects other guests rather than the operator’s image. The practical rule is simple: do not photograph the floor, the tables or other people without asking staff first, and expect the answer to be no in most areas.

Bag checks and metal detection are common at the entrance of larger venues. Travelling light shortens the queue and shortens the conversation. If you are carrying anything you would rather not hand over or leave — a laptop, a large camera, anything bulky — check whether the venue has a cloakroom before you arrive rather than at the door with a queue behind you.

The call to make before you leave

If an answer is vague — “normally”, “it depends”, “ask when you get here” — record it as unconfirmed rather than as a yes. Vague answers are the ones that turn into a wasted trip across the city.
